If there is more than one player on a central position the players will experience a contribution loss.

Meaning:

When a player is alone in a central position he will contribute 100%.
When there is two players in a central position they will both lose a bit of their contribution.
When there are three players in a central position they will all lose some more of their contribution.

If there for instance are 3 inner midfielders, all three will lose some of their contribution.

When loss of contribution happens due to crowding it will affect all skills of the player. Meaning that if you have 2 or 3 inner midfielders the contribution loss will not only mean they contribute with less playmaking skill but also defending skill, passing skill and so on.

Loss of contribution due to crowding only affects match ratings and not the stars, it does furthermore not effect the setpieces (direct or indirect)
