The World Cup system »

The World Cup begins every second season and the World Cup system is as follows:

Round I - Qualification
In the first of the two seasons between each World Cup, qualification matches are played. All countries are divided intro 16 groups. The groups are global and based on ranking. Groups consists of 7 or 8 teams (depending on the total number of countries in Hattrick). From week 3 to 16 in the first season these teams in each group will play against each other (home and away), and therefore up to 14 games will be played if the group consists of 8 teams. In certain weeks a team will not have a match if the group only consists of 7 teams. All international matches in the qualification round is played friday at 8 pm. - HT-time.

When the qualification is over (in week 11 of the first season) the 2 best teams of each group will move on to the next round. The rest are eliminated from the World Cup.

Round II
This round takes place Friday-Monday-Friday starting in week 8 of the second season. So there is a big gap between Round I and Round II. This gap can be used to play different friendly tournaments arranged by the national coaches.

As 32 teams has qualified for Round II, this round will be played using a system where all matches are played in a host country. The teams only face each other once and therefore each team only play 3 matches. The best 2 teams move on to Round III

In Round II the teams are divided into groups based on their ranking in the qualification round and then based on points, goal difference, goals scored and coin toss (in that order).
All teams who ended on first place in the qualification round are ranked amongst themselves based on points, goal difference, goals scored and coin toss. These teams are placed on the spots from 1-16, where the best team is the one with the most points.
All teams who ended on second place in the qualification round are ranked amongst themselves based on points, goal difference, goals scored and coin toss. These teams are placed on the spots from 17-32, where the best team it the one with the most points.

The groups are made using the following table:

Group I II III IV V VI VII VIII
Team 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Team 2 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9
Team 3 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24
Team 4 32 31 30 29 28 27 26 25
If teams end up with the same amount of points look at the bottom of this page.

Round III
This round is very similar to Round II. Round III starts in week 13 and is played on Friday-Monday-Friday in week 14. The 2 best teams from each of the 4 groups (8 teams total) move on to Round IV

The teams are divided into groups using the same system as in Round II. (One's above two's and thereafter using the 'snake method'). If teams end up having the same amount of points look at the bottom of this page.

Round IV
This round starts right after the end of Round III, meaning the games are played on Monday-Friday-Monday in week 15 to 16.

The teams are once again divided into groups based on their ranking from the round just played. Meaning the best number one, the worst number one the best number two and the worst number two in group I. The rest in the other group. Again if teams have the same amount of points look at the bottom of this page.

Very similar to previous rounds the two best teams from each round advances on to the semifinals.

Semifinals
The semifinals are played Friday in week 16. The winner of group I faces number two of group II. The winner of group II faces number two in group I.

The World Cup final
The final is played on the last Sunday in the season, i.e. week 16. No match are played for the bronze medal. Both losing teams of the semifinals receive a bronze medal.

*) When two teams have the same amount of points, goal difference and goals scored:
If two teams in a group end up with the exact same amount of points, goal difference and goals scored the teams are placed based on the ranking points earned before the round began. In the qualification round the ranking points earned in the last World Cup are used.
